Meet Your Captain

Captain John Dickson:

“My favorite part of being a charter captain is sharing the experience of relating directly with nature in a fun environment with new friends. The joy on an angler’s face as  the net slips under the huge fish they just hauled in is priceless.”

John Dickson, your captain:

  • Has a U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain’s License.

  • Is an experienced fishing guide

  • Is CPR and first aid certified

  • Has extensive experience fishing in the straits of Juan De Fuca

  • Has a contagious love for fishing in the Pacific Northwest.

The Boat: Even Odder

Step aboard the Even Odder—a safe, fast, and well-equipped vessel built for comfort and serious fishing.

Fat Otter’s new boat, Even Odder, is a true beauty—and I couldn’t be more excited to welcome guests aboard this 26'6" World Cat power catamaran.

With her wide beam and exceptional stability, she delivers a smooth, fast ride—even through rough seas—so we can reach the fish quickly and comfortably.

  • The spacious cabin comfortably shelters Captain John and three guests, while a cushioned transom bench provides open-air seating for up to three more anglers. Below deck, you'll find an enclosed head (bathroom) and a hand sink in the cuddy for added convenience.

  • A generous rear fishing deck offers plenty of room to reel in big king salmon off the downriggers, and the walk-around cabin design gives you full 360° access for battling bottom fish and monster halibut.

  • Powered by twin 200HP Yamaha outboards, the Even Odder boasts 400HP of reliable, smooth performance to get you to the fishing grounds quickly and efficiently.

  • The boat is outfitted with new high-speed Scotty electric downriggers, advanced sonar, and GPS navigation systems to help locate and land the catch of the day. We've also added Tanacom 750 electric reels for deep-water bottom fishing.

  • All tackle and gear are top-quality, professionally maintained, and backed up with spares to ensure a smooth, hassle-free day on the water. Lures, flashers, and bait are carefully selected based on what’s proven to work best for our targeted species.

  • For your safety and peace of mind, the Even Odder carries Coast Guard-approved safety equipment—plus extras. Every guest is provided with a comfortable, auto-inflating life jacket.

What To Bring

To help ensure a safe, comfortable, and successful day on the water, please bring the following:

  • Fishing license & catch record card
If we're targeting salmon or halibut, you’ll need the appropriate license and catch card. These are available at Mason’s Olson Resort in Sekiu, most Walmarts, or sporting goods stores throughout Washington.

  • Rain gear
A waterproof jacket and pants are essential, even on sunny days. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes or boots—waterproof is highly recommended.

  • Layers for changing weather
Temperatures can shift on the water, so dress in layers to stay comfortable.

  • Cooler (for your car)
Bring a cooler with ice to keep your fish fresh for the trip home. Please do not bring it on the boat—there is limited space onboard.

  • Food & beverages
Pack a sack lunch and any snacks you’d like. You may bring sodas or a few beers (please drink responsibly—no excessive alcohol). A cooler is provided on board for storing your food and drinks.

  • Seasickness medication
If you're prone to motion sickness, we strongly recommend starting medication the night before your trip.

  • Sunscreen
Even on cloudy days, UV rays reflect off the water—don’t forget protection.

  • Camera or phone
For capturing the memories (and the catch)!

  • Pack light
Storage space is limited. Please bring a small bag or backpack for your personal items.
